Hoy no me puedo levantar (Today I Can’t Get Up) was a jukebox musical based on the songs of the Spanish musical group Mecano. The show, which takes its title from the song of the same name featured on Mecano, the group’s first LP released in 1982, seeks to reflect the movida madrileña (Madrid Movida), a countercultural movement that emerged during the early 1980s and proposed the development of an alternative culture on a social and ideological level. It was characterized by initiating a profound change in the established way of life, especially among young people. The play premiered on April 7, 2005, at the Rialto Theater in Madrid. A year later, a version of Hoy no me puedo levantar (Today I Can’t Get Up) was simultaneously staged in Mexico City, at the Telmex Cultural Center.
